Meet Lemon Lord: Everything You Need to Know about the Rising Pop Artist & Her New Album “BE BLONDE”
Lemon Lord, an independent singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, California released her first debut album “Be Blonde” in late 2020. In light of this exciting release, Teen Idle Magazine got the chance to talk with her about her creative process, her album, and what it’s like to be an artist in today’s world.
Teen Idle: Where did your love for music come from? What made you want to start making your own?
Lemon Lord: Before I was Lemon Lord, I was a violinist all my life under my given name. I started playing classical music and then jazz, so that really informed my songwriting process and my understanding of song forms, chords, the different functions of each instrument and so forth. I have always loved pop, especially The Spice Girls who I grew up listening to, so Lemon Lord became my alter ego and was a place inside myself where I could express anything I wanted and could be totally free.
Teen Idle: What type of music did you listen to growing up?
Lemon Lord: I listened to a lot of classical music because that's what was around my house, but I also listened to Ella Fitzgerald, The Spice Girls, Prince and Madonna when I was kid. I also loved Britney Spears and lots of the iconic pop music from the 1990's and early 2000's.
Teen Idle: Who are your biggest inspirations?
Lemon Lord: I am inspired by any person who pursues their dream, big or small. I also love the strong and iconic women from a lot of the great TV shows. I love comedies and dramas like Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives, and the way that those shows can make us all laugh. I also am a huge fan of Marvel and DC, and I am always inspired by characters like Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel. In real life, Amanda Gorman is someone I look up to, especially because she grew up with some kind of speech impediment. To be such a gifted poet and have to overcome a barrier to reading your own poetry is something I really admire about her. She changed the world for the better.
Teen Idle: For readers who may be unfamiliar with you, what are three interesting facts about yourself that you’d like them to know?
Lemon Lord: My grandmother is from Barcelona but everyone thinks I'm Italian, I have the same birthday as Kim Cattrall (Samantha on Sex and the City), and my happiest moment in life was when Mark Hamill told me to follow my dreams. ;)
Teen Idle: Can you tell us a bit about what it’s like to get started in this industry and release an album during a pandemic?
Lemon Lord: The most important thing is to believe in yourself. The second most important thing is to keep meeting people who can help you along your way -- to expand your creative team, people you trust and so forth. Luckily I had done a lot of that before the pandemic, but now people are collaborating online more than ever before. The pandemic was and is a tricky one, especially for artists who are under enormous pressure to release material at a pace that is unrealistic -- but I know that the fans are really eager for shows and I am too! The pandemic has taught me to be patient, to trust myself and to have hope, always. <3
Teen Idle: What is your creative process like?
Lemon Lord: I get new ideas for songs all the time, and I record little clips of those into my voice memos almost every day. Only certain ideas get made into demos and then ultimately, full songs. For me, the challenge is to always be ready to receive a new idea, and then to write it down (if it's lyrics) or to record it (if it's a melody or something similar) before I forget it. You never know when these great ideas will come to you -- could be in the shower or the middle of the night, so you always have to be ready!
Teen Idle: What artist would you most like to collaborate with?
Lemon Lord: I would love to do a single or a remix of a song with deamau5 -- that would be so fun. I also love Janelle Monae. And so many others xo
Teen Idle: If you had to describe yourself or your life right now with one song what would it be and why?
Lemon Lord: I love the song "Free Woman" by Lady Gaga from Chromatica. It's a lesser known song from the album but it made me cry the first time I heard it. I love the celebration of womanhood, in all its forms, and how free and strong the chorus and post chorus feel. It's an amazing song, and when I need to really remember who I am, I put that on.
Teen Idle: If you had to describe your album in three words, what would they be?
Lemon Lord: girl power forever
Teen Idle: Any more projects we should look out for?
Lemon Lord: Yes! I'm writing more songs now and I'm also hoping to do my first show soon, as soon as possible here in LA. I also recently launched new merchandise on shoplemonlord.com. Thanks so much for these questions and for including me! xo LL
